Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.I use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs. My students use the read aloud feature in Microsoft Edge, rewordify to adapt difficult text, and the learning tools in Microsoft OneNote as needed. In middle school students need to learn how to recognize when they need more support and decide the best course of action to support their own learning. The reflection questions and suggested support tools help students learn how to leverage technology to overcome barriers to their learning and/or accomplish personal learning goals. The supports embedded in the lesson provide an authentic learning experience for students and opportunities to personalize and leverage technology to overcome barriers to learning. Desks are arranged in groups of four to encourage collaboration and discussion. The media album feature in Schoology also allows for collaboration. Students can view and contribute to the album as well as leave comments and/or explain their thinking to their peers.

Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.I implemented this authentic learning activity at the beginning of the school year to assess how my students were performing in relation to the common core writing standards (slide 1). This activity engages students in the writing process as they write a retelling of an event from their summer vacation (slide 7). After students have reduced their retelling to just six words they use an online thesaurus to revise their six-word story for word choice. Finally students choose a digital tool like Canva or PikMonkey from the Symbaloo webmix of options provided to creatively wrap their six-word story in a copyright-free image (slide 8). Students printed their final 1:1 six-word story image and displayed them on the classroom wall where I created an instagram feed for other classes and parents to see at open house.

Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital learning environments that engage and support learning. In this screencast I discuss how I used instructional design principles to redesign 21things4educators.net. The project provides free resources for digital age teaching and learning and is aligned to the ISTE Educator standards. Each "Thing" or big idea related to technology begins with an overview page where the educator can access the ISTE Standards for Educators the "Thing" aligns to as well as download a Reflection Document to set professional learning goals and reflect on their learning as they progress through the "Thing." The first section provides tools and resources that "Define" the "Thing." I recently enhanced the "Define" section of each "Thing" with a 5 question Knowledge Check developed in h5p. Once the learner has completed the knowledge check and updated their Reflection Document, they move on to the "Connect" section where they make connections to teaching and learning. Finally, in the "Apply" section, the educator reflects again and then creates a digital artifact to demonstrate competency for the completed "Thing." I designed the three part structure--Define, Connect, and Apply--of each Thing as well as the interactive h5p Knowledge Checks in every "Thing."
